Nobody knew his real name. Everyone just called him the Tattoo Man. It seemed like something of a misnomer, though. He wasn’t so much tattooed as vandalized and defaced, scars ravaging his face and limbs. The images carved onto his body looked like the work of a demented child. Only the demented child was the Tattoo Man himself, or so the story went.

Each of the images etched into his flesh was a portrait of one of his victims. He was no artist, so the faces staring out from his flesh were variously bloated, palsied, cross-eyed or otherwise deformed. Lack of talent was exacerbated by the fact that the Tattoo Man didn’t possess the tools of the professional tattoo artist; instead, he used broken glass, razor blades, really anything he had handy that boasted a sharp or ragged edge. His portraits were raw, swollen and angry with the threat of infection.

You see all of this from your hiding place beneath the stairs in a gap between the boards even the strays and rats won't bother with. Your breath is held for fear you'll be spotted, your face pressed against the knothole, for where else should one look but straight in the face of death should it come a knocking? The monster, the Tattoo Man, barged into the orphanage, a snarl on his lips, a blade in his hand stained with the grime of multiple deaths. A demand was made, then a lie given... weakly delivered too. The woman- a young housekeeper who toiled far beyond her wages- stuttered her denial of a young boy, your best friend and the boy who boasted that he had crossed the Tattoo Man and survived to tell about it. No one believed him, they all laughed enjoying the tale, believing none of it. With a move so swift and fluid the rusted blade might have been an extension of himself, the Tattoo Man delivered his first blow. The housekeeper crumpled in a heap of dirty skirts at his feet. There was no further warning. With that the man began his attack, brutally killing children as if in no possession of a conscious nor soul. Before your eyes, every last child fell to his or her doom. Then the place was torched. From your hiding place, you scamper to safety, but you never forgot that day. It was etched into your memory as clearly and vividly as the tattoos on that monster's body. Now that you are grown, now that you have trained, it is time to extract your revenge and justice upon this brute who has long deserved it...
